The 2010 Indy 500 Preview - Who ya got?

Ed Carpenter, his car pictured above, is the sleeper pick by IndyCar Garage to win the 2010 Indy 500
The 2010 Indy 500 – Who ya got?

The 94th running of the greatest spectacle in racing kicks off live on ABC at Noon EST on Sunday May 30th. The actually green flag will drop around 1:12ish, as Robin Roberts will lead the field of 33 down the main straightway. IndyCar Garage gives you several headlines heading into this years 500 mile race.

1. Well… answer the question…. Who ya got to win?

Helio for # 4? Briscoe or Power for #1? Dixon or Franchitti for # 2? Vegas gives all five of those drivers favorable odds heading into the race, and the bottom line is that a non Penske/Ganassi team hasn’t won on an oval since June of 2008. IndyCar Garage sees Helio Castroneves taking his fourth Indy 500 checkered flag.

2. Well name a sleeper then…

Dan Wheldon for #2? Ed Carpenter shocks the world and wins? Graham Rahal shows everyone up? Andretti bucks their May trend and puts one of their five drivers into victory lane? Any driver not driving for Penske or Ganassi that wins the race on Sunday, would be a big upset. IndyCar Garage likes Ed Carpenter as the sleeper pick.

3. IZOD , IZOD , IZOD

Like or love it, the IZOD title sponsorships has provided the most exposure the IndyCar Series has experienced since the pre-split years. IZOD will be in full motion this coming weekend with Celebrities, parties, Golf outings, VIP’s around the track, and of course the debut of the two seater pace car. Michael Andretti will drive celebrity Mark Walhberg around three pace laps prior to the start of the race, and then catch up to the field as they are taking the green flag, they will then pull in the pits as the green flag waves. Topping it off will be famous actor Jack Nicholson waving the green flag, yes this is a new Indy 500 and IZOD has a lot to do with it!

4. There is a buzz building within the series

Four women in the Indy 500 for the first time, new and old sponsorships coming on board (Sunoco & Boost mobile), The 20 million proposed double (Indy 500 & Coke 600), Randy Bernard, Pole Day attendance, Bump Day drama, and of course Robin Miller writing positive things about the IndyCar Series. The only thing that IndyCar Garage sees as a problem this weekend is the AWFUL timing of the Ed Hinton article’s on ESPN.COM, about the history of the split. Message to ED: Let it go buddy and go cover the NASCAR series, we don’t want you over in the IndyCar Series.

5. A new era of the IZOD IndyCar Series and the Indy 500.

The Indy 500 once stood for everything American’s knew about motor sports: Speed, Tradition, Rivals, Fans, and History. The 2010 Indy 500 will mark the second year of the centennial celebration at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and with last years black eye of Tony George behind them, IMS is moving in a new direction that could lead to one of the most talked about Indy 500’s (2011) in almost twenty years. The 2010 Indy 500 has the potentional to be just appetizer for the 2011 Indy 500!

IndyCar Garage Breaks down Bump Day

Sarah Fisher Racing teammate Jay Howard (pictured above) will miss the 2010 Indy 500

The 94th Indy 500 will take place a week from today, but not without spectacular drama from bump day. IndyCar Garage takes a look at what happened this afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

1. 33 spots open, but 37 drivers trying for them

For the first time in almost five years, bump day provided plenty of action. 37 drivers were going for 33 spots, and hopefully in years to come, the IZOD IndyCar Series can get up to 40 or maybe 45 drivers going for 33 spots. The Indianapolis 500 was known for several drivers going for a spot in the show, this year appears to be a step in the right direction.

2. The last 45 minutes where action packed

From about 1:30ish to 5 o’clock there was little drama on the track, but around 5:15 the drama started to build. Several cars filled the tech line in an attempt to qualify, among the worried competitors, Danica Patrick, and Simona De Silverstro. The last 45 minutes of bump day provided everything the fans paid to see, including crashes, bumping, and big names missing the show.

3. Why did Paul Tracy and Jay Howard remove themselves from the show?

Sebastian Saavedra hit the jackpot when Paul Tracy and Jay Howard both removed their speeds from the field and attempted to put their cars back in the field. The problem with Tracy’s and Howard’s strategy is that they never regained the speed to make the 94th Indy 500. At 5:58 , Howard , sitting on the bubble, had the option of pulling out of tech and letting Paul Tracy use his third attempt. Howard elected to pull out and use his last attempt at qualifying for the race. When Howard pulled out, he immediately eliminated Tracy, who wouldn’t have enough time to get back out on the track. So it came down to Saavedra and Howard, if Howard could have pulled out a higher average speed than 223.6, he was in the field. His four lap average? 223.1. If neither Paul Tracy nor Jay Howard would have removed themselves from the field , one of them would have made the race. Paul Tracy speed of 223.8 would have made the field, if he had not removed himself from the field. Jay Howard’s 223.8 would have stuck as well, if he had not removed himself. Instead, Sebastian Saavedra who wrecked about an hour before the drama unfolded, finds himself in the 94th running of the Indy 500.

4. What would have happened if Danica Patrick landed on the bubble?

Danica Patrick for awhile had her helmet on, car in tech, and strategy ready to go. Patrick possibly could have been on the bubble if a few more cars had found speed. The bottom line for Patrick is that she has had a very rough month and she will start in the lowest position (23rd) in her fifth Indianapolis 500.

5. The field is set and it’s missing a big name, a feel good story, a female, and a driver that took his first laps of the day today.

The starting field for the 94th running of the 2010 Indy 500 is set and several key drivers are missing from the field. Paul Tracy, who was running a one off for KV Racing will not be in the field, Tracy arguably is the biggest name in the series outside of Danica Patrick. Jay Howard, who is driving for Sarah Fisher Racing, will not be in the show, Jay is scheduled to drive three more races this year, look to see if that plan follows through. Milka Duno was attempting to race in her fourth Indy 500, but in reality never came close, Milka will continue throughout the season with sponsorships from Citgo. Jacque Lazier hadn’t turned a lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year, but this afternoon was called upon to drive the second A.J. Foyt car. Jacque gave a valid effort, but didn’t have the speed necessary to put it in the show. All in all, all four drivers will hurt and agonize over missing the race.

The Drivers who still need to get in the field of 33

(Team Owner Dale Coyne , seen above talking with Alex Lloyd, still doesn't have his second driver Milka Duno in the show)

As of 1:30 four drivers still have not qualified for the 2010 Indy 500, and some of them are former series Champions.

IndyCar Garage ranks them based off their chances of qualifying for the Show:

#1 – Tony Kanaan – 90% chance of making the race.

Tony has suffered some heartbreak in the last 24 hours(two crashes), but the 2004 IZOD IndyCar champ has enough toughness to get into the field. Andretti Autosport will do everything they have to do, to ensure Tony Kanaan gets into the field.

# 2 – Takumo Sato – 50% chance of making the race.

Sato has shown speed earlier in the month, but a wreck in practice yesterday set his program back. KV Racing has three cars in the field and Sato would be the fourth, he was the first driver bumped from the field with a speed in the 221 mph range.

# 3 – Milka Duno – 35% chance of making the race.

Milka could be the only woman not to make the show, she has been slow throughout the month and hasn’t broken the 224 mph barrier, which is what appears will be needed to make show. Even if Milka doesn’t qualify, there would still be history made by having four women start the race.

# 4 – Jacque Lazier – 25% chance of making the race.

Jacque is being called into replace A.J. Foyt IV (Anthony), aparently Anthony and A.J. didn’t see eye to eye this morning and Anthony left the team due to issues about the car. Jacque Lazier was rumored to have been in the third car for Foyt earlier in the month, but the sponsorship fell through. Jacque now has a chance to qualify a second Foyt car.

Who will get Bumped today?

Drama started early on Bump Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as Tony Kanaan wrecked his backup car almost in the exact same spot that he wrecked his primary car yesterday on Pole day.

Andretti Autosport Teammate John Andretti put his #43 Window World Machine safely in the field shortly after qualifications opened up at noon EST. Andretti Autosport now has four cars in the field of 33, with only Tony Kanaan yet to qualify.

Vitor Meira, Paul Tracy, Bruno Junqueria, Sarah Fisher, Alex Lloyd , and Mario Romancini all have qualified today but bumping has already begun with Takuma Sato being bumped out.

Who will take the Pole?

The 94th running of the Indy 500 will take place in just eight days, but today is when drivers will determine how they will start in the field of 33.

Among the several drivers that will be competing for pole speed

Helio Castroneves

Scott Dixon

Will Power

Dario Franchitti

Ryan Briscoe

Alex Tangliani

Dan Wheldon

Tony Kanaan

Marco Andretti

Davey Hamilton

24 spots will be up for grabs from 11-4 and then a half hour break will take place.

From 4:30 to 6, a new format called the fast nine will take place. The top nine fastest drivers will have to re-qualify their cars and take a shot at the pole.

IndyCar Garage live from Fast Friday at IMS

Fast Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway faced a heavy chance of showers, but the racing gods parted the clouds and track action stayed on schedule throughout most of the early afternoon. With Pole Day on the horizon for tomorrow, many teams searched for setups that would put them safely in the field of 33. Among the surprises on Friday, Alex Tagliani topped the 226 mph, and Alex Lloyd landed in the top ten with a speed of over 225 mph, Lloyd had been at the bottom of the speed charts for most of the week.

Tune into IndyCar Garage Weekly at 6:30 EST for more coverage of Fast Friday!

A flurry of track action expected today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The 5th day of practice for the 94th Indy 500 will take place under mostly cloudy skies today. The weather seems to have finally broken and sun is expected later in the day and throughout most of tomorrow. Thursday night and Friday during the day look rainy, but Saturday and Sunday look very good.

On the track action picks up again, with most teams trying to balance race day setups and qualification setups. E.J. Viso was released late Tuesday night from Methodist hospital. Viso hit the 1st turn wall late in practice and was taken to Methodist, but x-rays were negative.

Five teams made up the top five positions yesterday, as Dixon with Ganassi was P1, Moraes with KV was P2, Andretti with Andretti Autosport was P3, Tagliani with FAZZT was P4 and Wheldon with Panther was P5.

Most of the speeds have been with a tow (cars trailing cars) so pole speed looks to be similar to last year, right around the 224.8 (Helio’s pole speed last year) to possibly 226 mph (likely Ganassi).

Check out http://www.indycargarage.com/ for more updates later in the day and tune into IndyCar Garage Weekly on Friday live from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as we will have live coverage of Fast Friday and the week’s news.

Track Action resumes under cloudy cool conditions

The fourth day of practice for the 94th Indy 500 has kicked off and several drivers are seeking valuable date and practice time. The day started off with a light drizzle, left over from a days worth of showers on Monday.

The temperature is in the high 50’s, and is expected to stay that way until early tomorrow morning when temperatures should reach the high 60’s. Wednesday and Thursday look very good with little to no chance of rain. Friday looks like thunderstorms might sweep through the area.

Qualification weekend could be the best weather the track has seen all month, with temperatures expected in the mid 80’s and no rain in the forecast.

Several cars have taken to the track with the top 10 listed below from about two and half hours worth of practice.

1 9 Scott Dixon 0:39.7265 226.549 mph

2 32 Mario Moraes 0:39.8384 225.913 mph
3 26 Marco Andretti 0:39.8669 225.751 mph
4 77 Alex Tagliani 0:39.9301 225.394 mph
5 4 Dan Wheldon 0:39.9329 225.378 mph
6 11 Tony Kanaan 0:39.9696 225.171 mph
7 10 Dario Franchitti 0:40.0068 224.962 mph
8 3 Helio Castroneves 0:40.0297 224.833 mph
9 12 Will Power 0:40.0948 224.468 mph
10 15 Paul Tracy 0:40.1750 224.02 mph

The Month of May in Indianapolis has to include RAIN

The third day of practice for the 94th Indy 500, is being offset by rain and the extended forecast for the next 48 hours doesn’t look promising.

As part of a reduced schedule to help teams save money and create more buzz going into time trials, practice was cut by one week. The problem is that the weather is not playing into the track’s favor. Rain is expected throughout the rest of the day, leaving little, if any time for teams to gain more practice and data. The good news is that all seven rookies completed their four rookie phases yesterday and expect to be ready for pole day on Saturday.

The unfortunate news is that, with little practice time this week , teams will have little room for error. Expect Penske and Ganassi to challenge for pole and maybe an Andretti car to be in the mix, but don’t expect any teams to risk much. A crash to a primary car could cost teams valuable practice time and possibly impact their ability to make the race.

The weather forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday looks to be encouraging, with temperatures nearing the high 60’s. Saturday and Sunday look outstanding right now, but we all know this is May, and it’s Indianapolis. Expect the unexpected when it comes to weather.

Live from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The IZOD IndyCar Series took to the famed 2.5 oval in Speedway, Indiana for their second official day of practice in preparation for the 94th running of the Indy 500. Helio  Castroneves topped the speed chart with a lap of over 227 mph. Ganassi teammates, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon were P2 & P3 , as both drivers topped 226 mph. Dan Wheldon was fourth and Will Power was fifth.

Tony Kanaan was sixth, Mario Moraes seventh, and Ed Carpenter was 8th fastest on the day.

Several drivers saw track action today, as practice time for the veterans was moved up to 2:15 due to incoming weather.

Practice resumes tomorrow from noon to six. Pole Day is next Saturday from 11-6

Delta Wing on Track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this May?

For those of you who receive the Delta Wing Racing newsletter, than you may have caught this yesterday, but for those of you who don’t, here is the quote of the week:

We're also working on plans to try to have the car available at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at some point this month - we'll keep you posted!”

Wow, this would be a game changer if the morning of the Indy 500 the Delta Wing is driving 220mph around the track in the middle of pre-race festivities.
